Lake Sebu – The Well Spring of the Grand Seven Falls

Enjoying the scenery of these stunning lotus flowers. Will they make you take the Owong (canoe) and row in Lake Sebu? January 2018

I visited Mindanao last January 19th, and all the way from Davao City, I paid a visit to Talicud Island, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato. It was only a four-day trip, but having a close encounter with these humble provinces made me realize more that the Philippines is certainly rich in culture and it is something that we should all be proud of!

From the pristine beaches of Talicud Island to my close encounter with Islam in Maguindanao, I just knew that placid Lake Sebu will complement my stay with a bang!

Now let me share how I did all the fun as I walk you through my 2018 Mindanao adventure! Follow along!

Where is Lake Sebu?

Lake Sebu is located in South Cotabato, SOCCSKSARGEN Region, where the humble province borders with Sultan Kudarat in the North and West, Sarangani to the South and Davao del Sur to the Northeast.

South Cotabato can be reached by taking a plane bound for General Santos City or a plane headed to the more popular Davao City. Either flight would require a land travel to Koronadal (popularly known as Marbel) where vans or buses take routes to the placid Lake Sebu.

The Placid Lake Sebu

My excitement to see Lake Sebu was unexplainable that day. I knew that I was about to see something magical again and the lake was just perfect to wrap up my Mindanao adventure.

After taking almost a two-hour ride via a passenger van from A2Z terminal in Koronadal, we finally reached the Municipality of Lake Sebu.

Prior to our day of visit, we coordinated with the President of Tourist Drivers and Local Guides of Lake Sebu, Jorie Sabal, for our tour arrangements. Jorie is a proud T’boli and a local of Lake Sebu. He is a very informative guide and has several side stories to tell about the lake.

Our first destination was the very lake itself. I told Jorie that I wanted to see the lotus flowers first and he said that it is best to visit early in the morning just before the sun boast in full blast in broad day light.

These beautiful lotus flowers only bloom before the sun flaunts its optimal bright light. January 2018

We did a slight trek on our way to the lake. We passed by a small community of happy people who never failed to share a smile as Jorie kept his enthusiasm on giving insights about the lake. He mentioned that the lake was called El S’bu back in the old days and because of several immigrants settling in the town, the name evolved to Sebu or Lake Sebu.

Upon reaching the lake, Jorie asked if it is alright for me to take an Owong. He described it as a canoe or a boat without outrigger. I was a little hesitant at first because I know that the lake is 115 feet deep and I was not wearing a lifevest. He told me to just keep still and watch my balance as we get closer to the flowers. In the end, I decided to go on to see the lotuses upclose! It is not like I always have the time to visit South Cotabato, so the tour just went on!

Owong is the T’boli term for a canoe. It is a boat made out of dugout trunk of a tree. January 2018

The lotus flowers of Lake Sebu are really stunning. A single flower is beautiful enough so what more if you get surrounded by a bunch of them?! I really couldn’t get enough and my fear of falling just faded away.

For P100.00 and the picturesque scene, who wouldn’t take this close encounter with nature? When you visit the place, make sure to get closer with these pink beauties and capture a magical moment with the lake! 🙂

The Seven Falls

Lake Sebu is a total wonder! How can a lake supply the 7 falls without going significantly lower than its water level?

From the legend’s Boi Henwu forgetting to place the leaf cover in the source hole to the possibility of the rain cycle supplying the lake, my research was not able to answer my questioning mind!

For now, let us get to know the seven wonder falls of Lake Sebu!

1. Hikong Alo – T’boli: Passage Falls

This falls is the easiest to access. You can actually get closer and have it as a background for your Instagram post. Just be cautious with the mist as it might ruin your camera device. The falls is 35 feet high.

Getting closer to Hikong Alo. The greenish hue of the water suggests that it originated from the lake. January 2018
Hikong Alo is equally stunning from afar. January 2018

2. Hikong Bente – T’boli: Immeasurable Falls

Hikong Bente is the highest among the seven falls. At 70 feet high, they might want to rename it to measurable! Kidding aside, you can get closer to it by taking the concrete steps.

The falls’ rockwall formations, boulders and mist make it the most picturesque too. It was like a movie setting in the Amazons and I in search for the hidden paradise! The strong force of the falls and the mist gently tickling my face made my trip a worthwhile one!

The strong force of the lake produces this thick mist. A grand nature show off. January 2018

3. Hikong B’lebel – T’boli: Zigzag Falls

Most of the falls need to be hiked to witness them closely. But one exciting way to see this falls no. 3 is to take the zipline! For P250.00 on weekdays and P300.00 on weekends, this is already a treat for adventurers at heart!

The Zipline which is claimed as the highest in South East Asia was actually a total fun!!!! The view from above was absolutely breath taking! On the video below you will see the magnificent Hikong Bente and a short glimpse of Hikong B’lebel.

Unfortunately the other falls were not witnessed for safety reasons. Slippery trails are pretty dangerous for regular tourists like us!

4. Hikong Lowig – T’boli: Booth Falls

5. Hikong Ukol – T’boli: Wildflower Falls

6. Hikong K’fo-i – T’boli: Short Falls

7. Hikong Tonok – T’boli: Soil Falls

More about the Zipline adventures, the place also offers photopackages in case you want to take pictures of your seven falls encounter. You can even rent action cameras to record your reactions while in the heights! It is a must try if I may stress it!

Maguindanao – Beauty and Royalty Exposed to the World

The picturesque grand mosque stunning under the rays of the morning sun. January 2018

I first encountered the idea of traveling in Maguindanao when some of my Facebook friends posted their experience with the province. I was amused seeing how they sauntered around and enjoyed the culture of the humble place. I asked myself several times like how they possibly did that with all the negative news and write ups all over the publications and the net, so I reached out to Michelle and Ian (my Facebook friends) about DOS Municipality (Datu Odin Sinsuat), and all I got from them are good stories that are worth telling and sharing.

Where is Maguindanao?

Maguindanao is a province in Central Mindanao located in ARMM. It borders with Lanao Del Sur to the North, Cotabato to the East, Sultan Kudarat to the South and Illana Bay to the west.

You can reach Maguindanao by taking a flight going to Cotabato City or from a more common flight to Davao City.

From Cotabato City you will need to take a Townace (local version of a jeepney) bound for Awang to reach the first few tourist spots in Maguindanao.

If you took Davao City as an entry point, you will need to take a van or a bus in Ecoland terminal bound for Cotabato City. It will take around 5 to 6 hours to reach it by van. Buses will usually take longer because of several stops along the way.

Places I visited in Maguindanao

I visited Mindanao last January 19th, 2018 and took a flight bound for Davao City. I was advised by my DOS Tourism contact, Sir Datuhabib Salazar, to take the van bound for Cotabato City in Ecoland Terminal at 2am. Reaching Cotabato City early in the morning will give us more time to tour around DOS and its neighboring cities and municipalities.

The list below is the exact sequencing of our Maguindanao tour.

1. Cotabato City Hall

From the terminal, I met sir Datu and we walked for about 5 minutes and took a townace bound for Awang. It will cost you P8.00 per head to reach the City Hall. I just took several photos of this place and moved on to our next destination.

I will never miss a tourism signage like this. I was certainly here in Cotabato City! January 2018

2. Grand Mosque (Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Masjid)

A Middle East feel in Cotabato City. Aerial view of the Grand Mosque. January 2018

The Grand Mosque of Cotabato City is the largest mosque in the Philippines and was funded by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam. It was completed in 2011 at a reported  cost US$48 Million.

The other view of the mosque. Our herbivorous friends regularly visit the place. January 2018
Symmetry is very amusing to the eyes. The golden yellow domes are so conspicuous and very instagrammable. January 2018

Towering and stunning, you will suddenly feel like you are in the middle east! With its domes painted golden yellow and adorned with crescent moons, and its structure ornated with islamic designs, this is definitely a must-see place! A totally different cultural site in our country!

The domes are artistically crafted. Simplicity is very regal. January 2018
The main lobby of the mosque. Simple yet elegant. January 2018

Please be reminded though that the place is an Islamic place of worship, so wearing shorts is not allowed inside. Also, refrain from making unnecessary noise as a courtesy to the place.

To get to the mosque, take a townace bound for Awang from Cotabato City Hall for P8.00, alight at Bubung then take a habal habal. The motorcycle ride will cost around P300.00 round trip heading to the weaving center after.

3. Al Jamelah Weaving Center

Preserving the Inaul weaving craft is one of the main objectives of the center. Founded by Miss Albaya Wampa,  the center employs women from its local community.

The delicate hand weaving of Inaul. Preserving the craft for the future generations. January 2018

The place is a haven for hand-made textiles carefully and delicately woven. I was told that setting the threads will take weeks and will depend on how complicated the designs are. I was also advised that prominent Filipino designers deal with the weaving center because of its World class textiles.

4. White Mosque (Masjid Al-Nasser Abpi)

The White Facade of the Mosque makes it very relaxing to the eyes and shouts simplicity and regality at the same time. January 2018

This Islamic house of worship has become one of the tourist destinations in Datu Odin Sinsuat. From its white facade up to its elegant interiors, the owner of the mosque is truly inclined with his religious beliefs.

From the weaving center, one has to take a tricycle for P10.00 per head, alight in the main road and take a townace bound for Awang for P8.00 per head. From Awang, hire a tricycle/payong-payong finally heading to the White Mosque for P10.00 per head.

The White Mosque on a different perspective. Its white color complements the wide blue sky. January 2018

Like any other mosques, one has to be very keen upon entering the place. Make sure to wear appropriate attire and refrain from making unnecessary noise.

5. Blue Lagoon

If Surigao Del Sur has Enchanted River, Maguindanao certainly has the Blue Lagoon. This is, for me, the highlight of my Maguindanao Tour!

The placid Blue Lagoon seemingly inviting the guests to swim. January 2018

Located in Margues, Datu Odin Sinsuat, this magical site is just a few steps from the national highway. The water source of the lagoon comes from a spring and connects to the Tamontaka River.

The way to the lagoon. It is just a few steps from the National Highway. Sir Datu leading the tourist in me. January 2018

I was so enthusiatic about finally seeing the place! I am really fond of natural bodies of water so I was not able to contain my excitement to finally have the chance to swim on it!

The place was truly magical! A little eerie at first sight, but upon seeing how playful the children could get, I had no excuse but to take the plunge!

The children are having a playful encounter with the lagoon! Its depth did not hinder these children to swim freely! January 2018
The tree trunk at the center serves as a resting ground. The trunk naturally fell at the deepest part of the lagoon. January 2018

The lagoon serves as a drinking water source for the community and serves as a bathing and laundry ground too. I actually encountered a few young women doing their laundry at the end of the lagoon when I was walking down the improvised stairs to the shallow parts. This lagoon is just very important to the community!

The bluish hued water was very refreshing. I could spend my whole day swimming on the place. January 2018

The water in the lagoon is very cool, very refreshing and very revitalizing! I was just grateful that even though it rained the prior day, the lagoon was still bluish and not muddy at all! It was not at its most beautiful but it was on its decent appearance! The small fishes are good attraction too as they offer free spa at the same time!

Reaching the trunk in the middle of the lagoon. A big relief for not so good swimmers like me. January 2018

I have to mention that the lagoon has deep parts too, so extra caution is highly advised! The tree trunk at the middle of the lagoon is a big relief for not so good swimmers like me as it serves as a resting spot if you want to reach the middle part or the other end of the lagoon.

Currently, entrance to the lagoon is free. Maintenance plans are also still under negotiations between the local tourism office and the owners. Hopefully this will get settled soon as the place gets piles of rubbishes left out by irresponsible tourists.

The place is highly recommended though and you better visit the spot before lots of tourists flock Maguindanao!

To reach the lagoon from the White Mosque, take a townace bound for Tacurong for P8.00 per head and alight at the signage of the Blue Lagoon along the highway in Margues.

6. Pink Mosque (Masjid Dimaukom)

The Pink Mosque is situated in the Municipality of Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao. It was financed by Mayor Samsodin Dimaukom and completed on December 2012. The pink color of the mosque symbolizes peace, love, unity and interfaith brotherhood.

The Pink Mosque is a total stunner. It surely knows how to impress. January 2018
The pink entrance arc will definitely catch your attention. You should know that you just arrived to the Pink Mosque :). January 2018
Information about the Pink Mosque displayed on its walls. January 2018

The mosque is a total head turner and looks amusingly different than the usual. Its pink color is very pleasing and you can’t just take your cameras off of it. The accents of light and dark shades of pink has a very artistic touch and you just knew it was also built to impress its guests.

Rediscovering the Pink Mosque. I was advised to wear something appropriate for the visit. Wearing shorts is not allowed. January 2018

Like visiting other religious places, please be courteous and sensitive upon visiting this place. Always remember that RESPECT begets RESPECT and otherwise begets otherwise. 🙂

Soloist Insights

Maguindanao’s name was heavily tarnished in the recent years, but with the efforts of the local tourism offices, their initiatives in promoting the province are getting fruitful.

My Maguindanao tour is actually a good medium in exposing myself to the Islamic Culture. The tour paved a way for me to finally witness mosques in a literally colorful way! The courtesy of the people and the warmth they show to visitors like me is very inviting backed up by the very affordable cost of living!

The province is basically new to the tourism industry and they still have to learn a lot of things to catch up, but with their passion and determination, I just feel that It won’t be long before tourists flock Maguindanao. I am just grateful I was able to do it before it becomes too crowded! My day tour journey was just AMAZING and a hassle-free tour shouts a 9.7 out of 10 score!

For inquiries and direct coordination with the local tourism office of Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao, please contact Datuhabib Salazar on this number 09056171725. Just don’t forget to tell him that you got his number from Jiyon!

Canding Falls – When Tarlac is not “Just Tarlac”

The lowest tier of the falls. December 2017

It is almost Christmas, but that did not deter us from rediscovering places before the year folds. I received a text from my sister that her colleague is organizing a trip to Canding Falls, San Clemente, Tarlac, so when I heared about this, I told my self, “Tarlac finally!”
I visit far away places, so why not rediscover my home province? I have been in Tarlac my entire life, but the province still seems so unfamiliar to me!

Drone shots of Canding Falls. December 2017

Follow me through as we both unveil what this humble province has to offer!

How to get to Canding Falls

Canding Falls is situated in Brgy. Maasin, San Clemente, Tarlac. Our group opted to hire a jeepney from San Miguel and departed around 9am.

It is actually very easy to reach the falls. It is almost a straight 2 hour-travel from San Isidro bridge.

Upon reaching Brgy. Maasin, one has to pay the entrance fee of P10.00. You will need to do a short trek of about 20 minutes and cross three river trails. Just be cautious in crossing as the rocks can get really slimy. One technique that I was told of was to avoid the reddish rocks because those are the slippery ones. It will help trust me.

The river’s width is about 15 to 20 steps so you will not break a sweat at all! You just really need to walk slowly but surely!

Rates in Canding Falls. December 2017

While trekking, you will pass by boulders, string beans plantation, tall weeds and bamboo bushes. The place is not that hilly, so it will not be a difficult one. You will just need the usual sun-block, hats for the shade and a good pair of sunglasses.

What to do in Canding Falls

Swimming

The falls is multi-tiered so it means there are several pools to choose from. The lowest tier has 3 falls but the shortest  among the three. It also has the narrowest pool so less tourists flock on it. The deepest point of the pool is around 6 feet.

Having fun in the lowest tier. Cool waters at its best. December 2017
The tail of the lowest tier. Still brimming with green hues. December 2017

The second tier is the main pool. I consider it the main one because most tourists do the swimming here and this is the spot where cliff diving is done. This is just an easy trek from the first tier so no wonder why it is the most crowded one. Its deepest point is 20 feet according to some good swimmers.

Drone shots of the main pool. Just right for swimmers at heart. December 2017

The third tier requires rock climbing. The climb is not really hard, but one has to have strong limbs to do it. You can have a good view of the lower tiers on this area and I have to say that it is breath taking! There are large boulders on this area too and the place is just perfect for pictorials! Its pool is also wide and is around 6 feet deep. This is the spot where you can do a cliff dive to the second tier pool.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing will start on the second tier. As mentioned, the climb is not hard but one has to be cautious.

Rock climbing for good swimmers. These young men did a little twist for their rock climbing escapade. The swam across the deep main pool to reach the other end and climb to make a good fall. December 2017.

Cliff Diving

The second tier is perfect for cliff diving. The third tier can easily be climbed to do the plunge and the deep pools are very ideal for this adrenaline pumping jump!

The spot in the upper tier where you can cliff dive to the 20 feet-deep pool. December 2017

Fishing

The river has catfishes so you can use the rods if you have spare time for it. Unfortunately, cooking and eating is prohibitted in the area so you gotta bring the catch home. 🙂

Personal Insights

The place is captivating. I never knew that this place exists until a few months ago. The easy trek, the clear and clean waters, fun-filled activities available on the place and affordable prices will convince you to take a visit. The area is also less developed so you can have a close encounter with nature.

The clear water of Canding Falls. December 2017

The water in Canding falls is cold. Very refreshing and very revitalizing. It can tend to be very chilly though, but one thing that I discovered was that you just need to keep swimming so you won’t feel the chill! Perfect if you want to lose those calories after the holiday season!

The stretch of the second tier of Canding Falls. Shot by DJI Mavic Pro. December 2017

One sad thing that I have to say is that irresponsible guests ruin the place. Trash is evident and the place is not so maintained. I just hope that the local government would collect ample entrance fees to maintain the place. May this blog reach them so we could keep the place for our future generations to enjoy!

Overall, experience with Canding falls is a must try! Easy to access and very affordable! An 8.5 rating is well deserved!

So now you know that Tarlac is not just about rice fields and highways! We have rivers and falls too! 😛 Why not complete your project 81 and take Canding falls for Tarlac? Visit San Clemente, visit our province!

Feeling thankful for the natural wonder in the hanging bridge of Canding River. December 2017

Silanguin Cove – Don’t Judge a Beach by Its Sands

Mountain view in Silanguin. The cove is not only perfect for swimming but also for hiking. Trek and rediscover the hidden falls. November 2017

We first encountered Pundaquit in November 2016 when I was looking for a quick getaway close to Manila. We were bound to Nagsasa that time and while waiting for the bus departure in Pasay terminal, I had a chance to converse with a couple who also manages tours in Pundaquit. They mentioned about the farthest cove in the area which usually takes an hour and a half by boat, less crowded and more mesmerizing! My fascination of Silanguin has ignited that day, and just last week, in time for the US thanksgiving, that very wanderlust became a reality.

The cove’s long stretch flaunts its powdery gray sands. November 2017

How to get to Silanguin Cove?

The best way to get to Silanguin is by private car for the land travel. You need to head to San Antonio, Zambales (destination before reaching Iba, Zambales) then take a route to Pundaquit. Once you reached the Pundaquit beach, rent a boat and tell the boatman that you are headed to Silanguin Cove.

The tourism signage of San Antonio Zambales. November 2017
The crowdy Pundaquit Beach with its equally stunning mountain views. November 2017

Alternatively, you may take a bus bound for Iba, Zambales or Santa Cruz, Zambales. In our case, we took a Victory Liner Bus in Pasay Terminal and departed around 4AM. I suggest to buy tickets for San Antonio in the booth to secure a designated seat. You will not want a scene where you are comfortably seated and an irate passenger who just came in would tell you that you are on his seat.

Travel time will take around 4 hours until you reach the town proper of San Antonio. Do not worry if you are not familiar with the place as the bus conductor will get everyone’s attention once the bus reaches the destination.

From San Antonio Municipal Hall, you will need to hire a tricycle going to Pundaquit. It will take around 15 minutes until you reach the beach where you can rent a boat for Silanguin. Travel time from Pundaquit beach will take around 2 hours to the cove.

The main landmark for San Antonio is its municipal hall. November 2017

Cost Breakdown to Silanguin Cove

Victory Liner Bus to San Antonio – PHP 550.00 round trip (PHP 275.00 one way)

Tricycle from San Antonio to Pundaquit Beach – PHP 60.00 per head round trip (PHP 30.00 one way)

Beautiful sceneries are usual in clean San Antonio. November 2017

Environmental Fee – PHP 40.00 per head

Boat good for 4 persons (Standard) – PHP 2,500.00 to PHP 3,500.00 round trip and inclusive of island hopping.

For Boat services, you may contact kuya Johnny Oligario at 09202224687. His rates for 4-passenger boats are as follows:

4 passengers  : PHP 3,000.00

2 passengers : PHP 2,500.00

5 passengers or more : PHP 2,500.00 per boat

On top of the round trip travel, service may include, tents, cooking utensils, drinking water, firewood, ice and cooler depending on the arrangement. (Make sure to mention these add-ons when you contact him)

TIP : NEVER PAY THE COMPLETE BOAT RATE RIGHT AWAY. I was advised by kuya Johnny to pay only half on our way to Silanguin and pay the other half on the way to Pundaquit to avoid getting scammed.

Entrance Fee: PHP 150.00 per head (We checked in to Mang Rading’s (Rodrigo Ogario) resort.

Cottage: PHP 500.00 per day for open cottages and PHP 800.00 per day for cottages with a super basic room/space for sleeping.

Activities to do in Silanguin

Aside from swimming, I would recommend walking along its long stretch. Its powdery sand makes walking on bare feet comfortable. Just make sure to do the walking on the late afternoon as the sands could get really hot at noon!

Who says gray sand and clear waters are not beautiful? Silanguin cove proves that you can never judge a beach by its sands. November 2017

The left portion of the cove when facing the sea is more amusing than the right. It has  a river and a sandbar which separates freshwater with the saltwater.

A closer look to the river with its curves and natural soil carving. November 2017
My sister and I having fun in the sandbar. The water in the foreground is freshwater while the one beyond the sandbar is saltwater. November 2017

You can have a quick plunge to the waist-level water of the river.  Its fresh, clear and cool water is very ideal for those who are not good swimmers but still want to have a splash! This spot of the cove equates to fun! Truly a stunning scenery and a natural playground where you can spend a day without getting bored! If not for the rain and the dusk coming in, we could have spent more time to the place. Definitely a good justification to revisit soon!

If you want a more challenging activity, you may opt to do hiking to chase the Silanguin waterfalls. In our case, we coordinated with the owner of the resort that we checked in and he recommended someone who could assist us to the falls. We started the trek around 6:30 AM for a rate of PHP 100.00 per head.

Trekking in Silanguin. We passed by tall weeds and huge boulders on our way to the falls. November 2017

The trek took us around an hour before we finally reached the falls. We passed by tall weeds, huge boulders and river trails. It was actually an easy trek, but it can tend to be a little slippery along the way. It is advisable to wear jogging pants, long sleeve tops and trekking shoes to avoid getting cuts and bruises along the way.

Trekking in Silanguin means passing by talls weeds and huge boulders in the river trail. November 2017

I was actually wishing that it will all be worth it. I initially had that feeling that they are promoting just anything to have additional offering on their ads, but boy, when we reached the destination, I wanted to plunge right away!

This low tiered falls will totally stun your eyes with its natural beauty. November 2017

The falls is a low-tiered falls, but it left us totally stunned! Its sweet and clear waters made the kid in me mind its usual routine as fun started to unfold.

The kid in me enjoyed the clear waters of the falls. Its black boulders accented mystery to its pool. November 2017

Personal Insights

Silanguin cove is far for sure, but a six-hour total travel is still tolerable enough to satisfy that wanderlust. The scenic view of the cove is so relaxing that it will replenish that zen that your mind is longing for.

Wandering Silanguin is a total interaction with nature. November 2017

The farthest cove of Pundaquit delivers. Its long stretch of gray sands may seem ordinary for many, but if one would saunter around and witness the river, the natural soil carvings and the sandbars, he/she will definitely utter that this place is worthy to be revisited again and again and again.

Its gray sands will never be Silanguin’s debacle. Dark is equally beautiful. November 2017

The mountain range of the cove is ideal for active guests too. Just make sure that you trek with a guide to avoid accidents along the way.

The hidden falls is also something to look forward to. Its untouched beauty is very welcoming and its a total relief for the busy mind. It is total interaction with Mother Nature!

All in all, the enthusiasm in me got retained up to this moment to the extent that I already have plans of visiting it again. I will definitely give this place a 9.8 soloist score!

I am certainly having fun. The rainbow’s end is just above me. I should be lucky. November 2017

Tinuy-an Falls – Towering from the Courage of the Heroic Natives

Towering at 55m, Tinuy-an falls is called the little Niagara Falls of the Philippines. November 2017

After our encounter with the Enchanted river, we went straight to Tinuy-an falls. I clearly remember that it was raining so badly and I was outloud wishing that the sky will get clearer even just for an hour! I was glad that the rain stopped and we had a good time in Bislig!

Taking more than an hour from Hinatuan, you can really feel that bumpy ride. I couldn’t thank enough that we opted to rent a van, for the road was muddy because of seasonal rains and the road projects were ongoing. (If interested in renting a van, kindly send me a message for the details of my contact. I am not in anyway connected with them)

It will take around an hour from Hinatuan to Bislig.

Going to Bislig was still a bliss though! The ubiquitous coconut trees were a sight to behold and I can recall my parents getting amazed at how these trees are just all around the place. They were even joking that how come there are no coconut juice vendor along the way.

Living the tourist life, we can never skip a tourist destination signage like this. November 2017

Upon reaching the destination, the lowest tier of the falls will greet you with a positive vibe. The water was pretty strong that day probably because of the recent rains but it was still picturesque nonetheless.

The lowest tier of the falls greeting every visitor. November 2017

To give a brief insight about Tinuy-an, the name was derived from Tinuyo-an; a native vernacular which means an intentional act to achieve a goal. There is actually an FYI post along the main entrance which narrates the ” Legend of Tinuy-an” involving the Magdiwata Mountain Settlers and the cruel tribesmen of Agusan. You may refer to the photo below:

A very short narration of how the name of the falls was derived. November 2017

Rates and Fees

The rates are pretty affordable. You can refer to the photo below for the actual rates as of November 2017.

Personal Insights

The place is amusing, after paying the entrance fee, you are free to saunter around and take pictures until you drop. You can go near the falls but you need to take the safety precautions.

There is also a bamboo/wooden bridge across the river where you can get a front picture of the falls. This will also lead you to the function hall where you can get the left sided perspective of Tinuy-an. This is literally picture galore and you can take photos of different views as much as you want.

You can cross the bridge to get a better perspective of Tinuy-an. November 2017

The place was misty that day. Tinuy-an was mighty and you can visibly see the sun rays striking through the mist. It was an enchanting moment indeed!

Tinuy-an Falls tends to be misty after the rain, that sometimes you can spot a rainbow in the area. November 2017

You can also do the bamboo rafting where you can get much closer to the falls. It would be exciting to feel how powerful the falls can get and how cool its water is. Unfortunately on our end, we were running out of time. We needed to go to our next destination as the way out of Tinuy-an can get a little dark. That was on top of the muddy road and the busy road widening project that we experienced going to the place!!!!

My parents and I taking a souvenir of Tinuy-an. You can see other guests doing bamboo rafting in the background. November 2017

All in all it was a fun-filled experience! So glad that I finally met mighty Tinuy-an. You better visit this peaceful place and let me know if you also had fun 🙂

Enchanted River – An Encounter with a Totally Different World.

Mindanao was always perceived as a troubled island. With all the undesirable events in the past, uprising and civil wars that are still experienced up to this modern day and misconceptions arising from difference in religion , a lot of Filipinos refrain from visiting this heaven on Earth. But are you interested in knowing of what you could be missing for skipping an itinery in gentle Mindanao? You better start taking notes now!

Let’s start our journey with Surigao Del Sur’s Enchanted River!!!

Two boatmen are about to feed the fishes in the river. November 2017

Located in Hinatuan, Surigao Del Sur, this deep spring river is mesmerizing to the maximum level. Like saphire and emerald dashing in my eyes, It was hard to take away my eyes from the scene. It seems like I can stay the whole day in here just enjoying its clear and cool waters. The river flows nonstop to the Philippine sea and all the way to the mighty Pacific Ocean.

The name of the place was derived from “Rio Encantado” from the poem written by  Modesto Farolan.

Translated from Spanish “Rio Encantado” derived from the poem of Modesto Farolan. Signage on November 2017

Activities

Swimming is the main activity on this spot, but sadly, swimming in the main part of the river is no longer allowed as a mean for the local government to preserve the natural wonder.

The main area of the river is now closed for swimming. Guests can only swim at the tail of the river. November 2017
A designated swimming area is now alloted since the main area of the river is now closed to the public for swimming. November 2017.

You can also witness the fish feeding scheduled every noon. It is a sight to behold as you can see the fishes swimming in crystal clear water as they all try to chase and outswim each other for the food.

Other Details

Fees are collected by the local government for the maintenance of the place. Prices are as follows:

Entrance : PHP 40.00 per head

Parking: PHP 20.00 per vehicle

Lifevests (Required if you will go swimming): PHP 15.00 per hour. You cannot use your personal lifevest.

How to get to Enchanted River

I actually visited the two Surigao Provinces with my parents to celebrate my birthday, so I had to account for their comfort and convenience for the travel. I rented a van to pick us up from Bancasi Airport in Butuan City to avoid the hassle of huggling and looking for spot contacts for the next destination. The van rate that I got was PHP 2,500.00 per day plus gas.

It is actually advisable to rent a van for groups as the top spots are far from each other and there are ongoing road widening projects. Weather concerns should also be accounted for for Q4 tends to be rainy in the region. I just cannot imagine my parents taking habal habal with backpacks on for long hours and getting wet if it rained.

Ima and Tatang taking a remembrance of this wonderful river. November 2017

If interested on getting my contact’s details, please do not hesitate to send me a message.

Other than Butuan City, you can reach Surigao via Davao City or CDO. PAL and Cebu Pacific have daily flights to the aforementioned destinations.

Personal Insights

The Enchanted River is really a natural wonder. You will get amazed with its colors and crystal clear waters. Honestly, all I could say is “Wow” while taking pictures of this site.

The enchanting river during the fish feeding activity at 12 noon. November 2017

However, I have to stress out that having lunch to the place is not recommendable. Meal prices are insane and Viands good for 3 to 4 persons range from PHP 100.00 to PHP 150.00 and rice for the same headcount is fixed at PHP 70.00. Now if that comes cheap for you, wait until you find out that utensils are not free and spoon, fork, plate and cup is priced PHP 5.00 each. But wait there is more! There is a designated place to dine and you have to rent a set of table and 4 chairs for PHP 150.00. Incredible isn’t it?

I suggest to just bring light snacks and find a good place to dine somewhere else. The food served in the Enchanted River is not good anyway.

Make sure to take a plunge too. I havent had the chance to swim because of time constraints of going to Tinuy-an, but by the looks of it, I just knew that the place is certainly amazing!!!  One more thing, you better visit the place on an early morning and on a weekday if you do not want photobombers all over the place. This famous place can get super crowded!!! Plan ahead of time and this is gonna be amazing!

Siquijor’s Other Tourist Attractions

St. Francis de Assisi Church

The Church with the welcome signage. July 2017

The church is basically close to the sea port. In fact one can easily spot it after passing by the gate. You can never get lost because of the very conspicuous welcome signage.

The church is not grand nor towering, but knowing that it was built a long time ago is something that makes it exceptional. The inside of the church is pretty basic but you can feel that antique vibe once you come in.

If you are a Catholic Christian or someone who has an appreciation for history and culture, then this is a go. A 30-minute stay may be enough for this tour. Take time to say a prayer and take some pictures afterwards.

Capilay Spring Park

Enjoying the zen facet of the park. July 2017

This is a pool of natural spring water situated in a park. At first, you may think that it is a swimming spot, but having the fishes in the pool, you will start believing otherwise. I think swimming was allowed before, but a new ordinance has prohibitted it just recently.

I am not sure if it was just me, but there was not much of an activity in the place. The park is instagrammable though and the best part of it is – no entrance fee! Take pictures, spend time for 15 to 30 minutes and you are all set to your next destination!

400 Year-old Balete Tree

In the Philippines, Balete trees are believed to be mystical. In Tarlac, these trees are considered eerie and are regarded as dwellings of supernatural creatures like elves or wicked spirits.

Honestly, I was a little scared at first knowing I will be close to a 400-year old  Balete tree, but when I saw how tourists enjoy the cold waters, I decided to do the same thing.

The top of the 400 -year old Balete tree. July 2017

Located in Lazi, this spot is along the National Highway. If you are bound to this place, you will never get lost because tourists usually flock as this is a very popular place.

For a donation of P10.00, you can experience the Fish Spa. Fish spa, if a little uncommon in your country, is basically a pool or a sanctuary where you dip a part of your body (usually feet) and let the fishes feast on your dead skin cells or calluses. A very ticklish experience (at least for me) but a very relaxing one.

Fishes hovering around my feet for a nible. July 2017

The place is really good and there are even souvenir shops and food stations to complement the Siquijodnon experience. You may also opt to stay a little longer, but I think a 30-minute to an hour stay is enough for this place especially if you planned on sauntering the Island for just a single day.

San Isidro de Labrador Parish  Church/ Lazi Church and the Lazi Convent

The Lazi Church was founded in 1857 and is dedicated to St. Isidore the Laborer. It is also known for its convent which was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines.

Like the St. Francis de Assisi church in Siquijor, Siquijor, this church is not towering and not heavily ornated. But personally, I find this church very attractive. It’s vintage texture and pinkish tint is so likeable and very pleasing to the eyes! I even did a quick pictorial in front of its door and made it my FB profile picture 🙂

https://www.instagram.com/p/BXJl-ZmlyjP/

The Lazi Convent on the other hand is regarded as the largest and oldest convent in South East Asia if not in whole Asia. It houses a museum which you can  visit for P20.00 to see very old religious artifacts and wood carvings of saints. You need to take note though that taking pictures is prohibited inside the museum.

If you opted to visit the place, make sure to take time and reflect, pray harder and take good memories of the church.

Mountain view tour in Maria

Kuya Loloy (my tour guide) brought me to the highlands of Maria, Siquijor to see breath taking views of Cebu, Dumaguete and Bohol. My pictures do not seem to give justice because the aforementioned islands were not that evident, but still, it was a great view!!! It did have that Batanes vibe or was it just me?

It is always refreshing to see something not so usual especially for someone like me who grew up in the plains. Better prepare your cameras and touch up for your pictorials if you decided to add this on your tour.

Detours are the best. Not a usual part of the itinerary. July 2017

Guiwanon Spring Park

The mangrove park was the last part of the tour. It was the second time (first was in Alibijaban, Quezon) for me to see the mangroves upclose and it is just amazing how these trees get to live in the water with all their roots looking like stilts.

Just along the Circumferential Road, Guiwanon Spring Park is very much accessible. You just need to pay P10.00 and you are good to saunter the place.

The wooden pavement on stilts is a simple beauty. You will have that rural feel like people use natural materials to get on with daily life. I loved the simplicity of the place on top of the lush scenery and relaxing breeze.

For those who wanted to stay in the place, the park has 3 tree houses to choose from. From P250 to P350 a night, a simple Siquijodnon experience is waiting for you. Just be informed that the rooms are far from regal so be prepared for a little discomfort.

The Park also has an activity area for gatherings and events. I am not just certain how many persons it can accommodate but similar to the tree houses, the Pavillion is pretty simple. For around P1,500, you can have the Pavillion for a day. It has a very relaxing view too and you can have a glimpse of the whole mangrove park!

Guiwanon Spring Park is really just more of a sight seeing place and a haven to appreciate nature. It may be a dull moment for others, but personally, I love the place. It is a good place for children, a perfect spot for a conversation  and a relaxing break from stress.

My Siquijor experience is one of my best tours so far. I will visit this again and spend more days! For only a one-day tour that I spared, there sure are good places that I have missed from this mystic island. Until we meet again!

Cambugahay Falls – Waterfall in Love with Three Tiers of Fun (Itinerary)

wp-image-607047765
Cambugahay falls (2nd tier) on silky water effect. July 2017

If you’re into chasing waterfalls, then this wonder is for you! You don’t need to trek and hike nor exert a lot of effort just to witness the powdery blue waterfalls of Cambugahay. All you have to do is take around 140 steps down and voila!, you are ready to take the plunge! The entrance fee is free but you have to pay a parking fee ranging from P5.00 to P20.00 depending on the type of vehicle you are bringing.

Located in the town of Lazi, this three-tiered waterfalls is a bliss. Its waters source from natural springs and end up leading to Lazi Bay.

How to get to Siquijor? Click here.

How to get to Cambugahay Falls?
If you get a habal habal to tour around, then this spot is automatically a part of the itinerary.

If you opted to rent a motorbike, then you will just need to get a map to get to this place. The National highway is pretty encircling the island so you won’t have a hard time sauntering around. With Waze on hand or with the aid of the helpful locals, it will be easier than you could imagine.

Three-tiered waterfalls, three-tiered fun

The lowest tier is known for its Tarzan swings and according to the young men who assist in the swing, the pool of the first tier is 6 to 8 feet deep! So if you are not a good swimmer like me, oh well, i suggest taking precautions and start putting those life vests on. It is better to be safe than sorry!!!

This part of the falls also equates to absolute fun, so I encourage everyone to give Tarzan jump a shot! I literally did 5 swings and if not for my limited time, i could have stayed and Tarzan-swing the whole day!

It is interesting to note that there are two swings in the lower tier. One in front of the falls and one on the right. The experience is technically the same on either swing, but if you are to take pictures, then the one located on the right is just more instagramable. 🙂

Cambugahay falls (first tier) on silky water effect. You can spot the Tarzan swing on the right. July 2017

Cambugahay falls (first tier) Tarzan jump from the front swing (Slow motion video). July 2017

The second tier is a few climbs up and i have to say that this portion is less appealing to the tourists. I checked it out as usual and it was only I who bothered to explore it that time. I took a dip and I found out that it is a little shallow, rocky and grassy. Not really much of an activity and only good for picture taking.

wp-image-1549595836
The rocky tier of Cambugahay falls on silky water effect. July 2017

The topmost tier is where most of the tourists flock. It has a wider pool and has a reasonable depth that is ideal for the children and elder people. The third tier also has a Tarzan swing but more friendly in nature 🙂

The third tier which also has its own version of Tarzan swing. July 2017

You have to take note that each Tarzan swing requires a P20.00 fee for an unlimited jump. The guides will get the ropes for you and will even take pictures of you upon instruction.

If it won’t hurt your pockets that much, I suggest giving these guys a tip. 🙂 Any reasonable amount will surely do and will get appreciated!

Siquijor – The Island of Love Potions and Misconceptions (Itinerary)

LRM_EXPORT_20170715_043736-01
Enjoying the fish spa in Capilay Spring Park. July 2017

I first had a glimpse of Siquijor when I saw its travel advertisement in the domestic airport. I wondered why it never crossed my mind visiting it. I was probably so new to traveling or I was not aware of what it could offer. Then I uttered to myself that I am going to visit it soon. Then my mom hearing my not so audible voice in her very Capampangan tone told me something that made me laugh a little. She muttered, “Nang buri mu ken?!, dacal mangkukulam ken!(“What is so interesting there?!, there are lots of witches there!”) I just nodded to end the conversation but a travel plan came gushing to my mind. 🙂

General Information about Siquijor

  • Siquijor was called “Isla del Fuego” during the Spanish Colonial period because of the fireflies which are numerous in the island at that time.
  • Siquijor is also the 3rd smallest province of the Philippines after Batanes and Camiguin and was once a municipality of Negros Oriental.
  • The people are called Siquijodnon and speak Bisaya and English.
The Map of Siquijor

How to get to the Island?
Siquijor is also in the heart of the Visayas so you can definitely reach it by ferry from Cebu, Bohol and Dumaguete. Needless to say, if you are coming from Manila, you will need to take a flight to the aforementioned destinations to reach this paradise.

In my case, i took a flight bound to Dumaguete since I was planning to tour around Negros Oriental. From the airport, i took a motorcab going to my hotel (P50.00) for my escapade stay. My Siquijor tour was on my 3rd day so I took a motorcab from my hotel to the seaport (P10.00) and secured a ticket (around P150.00) with GL Shipping Lines (please make sure to bring 1 valid ID) to catch the earliest departure of 5:45AM. You will also need to pay a port fee (P15.00) for this trip. Travel time will take around an hour and a half.

Touring around Siquijor Island

Siquijor is basically a tourist friendly destination. The rates are affordable from lodging and accommodations, food and up to the entrance fees. You better book the tickets and experience Siquijodnon fun!

Upon seeing the island from the ferry as it approaches the port of Siquijor, you can immediately say that you are about to experience nature at its best. Mountains are lush and the waters are clean! I had that big excitement to alight right away and set foot on the island!

Approaching the port of Siquijor. July 2017
Siquijor port under renovation as of July 2017.

Finding a tourist guide is a breeze. You can definitely find one in a step of 1 or 2. People with wide welcoming smiles will meet you to offer a ride and tourist guiding services so just approach one and you are ready to go!

Rates for a habal habal ride will range from P800.00 to P1,200.00 while a tricycle (good for 2 to 3 persons) will range from P1,500.00 to P1,800.00 depending on your haggling skills. In my case, i contacted a referral from a colleague so i just have to meet him for the tour.

Another option is to get a motorbike for a 24-hour rent. Just make sure to bring your driver’s license with you because they will not lend you one if you have nothing to present. This option is very ideal because the major road is technically around the island (check the posted map above) that you can visit all the major attractions within a day! My contact told me that the rate is usually at P1,200.00 but he could give me or my friends a discounted rate of P1,000.00 if I rent on my next visit! Now more reasons for me to come back! 🙂

There are also lots of hotels and homestays in the Island – from 4-star ones to affordable ones! Search from Agoda or any lodging arrangement app/site and pick one based on your preference.

Tourist Spots in Siquijor

We visited several tourist spots! You have to come early to make sure that you could cover the most famous spots in a day! I took the 5:45AM ferry and I reached the island around 7:20AM. My tour started around 7:45AM, so I was able to saunter the island at my heart’s content!

Manjuyod Sandbar – In Sync with the Tides (Itinerary)

LRM_EXPORT_20170726_030415-01
A clear bright sky over the nipa huts on stilts

Sandbars – we always get excited when we hear that it’s part of our itinerary (or is it just me?). It could probably be that thrill when we get to feel so lucky that the tides were on our favor and let the sands appear before our very eyes!

Manjuyod Sandbar is no exception. I just knew that time that it is going to be fun! The weather and the tides cooperated really well that I could write and share insights with you today! Now let’s walk on the sand!

How to get to Manjuyod Sandbar?

  • If you’re in Dumaguete, you have to take a motorcab to Ceres Bus Terminal (P10.00)
  • Take a Bus that will pass Bais City (I took a bus bound for Guihulngan) and tell the conductor to drop you off in the City Police Station (P60.00). It will take around an hour and a half to reach the city.
  • Take a motorcab and alight in Canibol or Capiñahan Wharf (P30.00 to P50.00)
  • Rent a motorboat for a whole day activity (P2,500.00 for a 10-person boat or P1,500.00 for a 4 seater). There are boats for more seating capacities, but I am not certain of their prices. I personally took the 10-seater because i find it safer. 😛

Where to stay in Manjuyod?

There are no hotels in the area. The only available option if you are planning to stay overnight are the cottages. The large cottage may be rented for P4,000.00 and the smaller ones for P3,000.00. You also have to take note that electricity is limited so you may not be allowed to charge your phones and other gadgets, unless you want to stay in total darkness. 😛 For more information or booking, you may contact the Bais Tourism Office at (035) 402 8338 or email them at baistourism@gmail.com

I personally felt a whole day tour is fair enough for a solo traveler like me, so i got back to Dumaguete around 5PM to rest for my flight back to Manila the following morning.

The cottages for overnight stays. July 2017

Other activities to do and spots to visit

  • Dolphin watching – You have to take the tour early to catch these wonderful creatures. I personally reached Bais City from Dumaguete at around 6:30 AM. This was my first activity and from Capiñahan Wharf it will take you around 30 minutes to reach their sanctuary.
  • A visit to Mangrove Forest – Another 20 to 30-minute boat ride from the dolphin watching point. It is basically a mangrove forest with a concrete pathway at the center. No entrance fee. Pictorial gallore.
Literally a new breath of fresh air. July 2017
  • Olympia Island hiking – This is an island of a fishing community. You can take a hike to the highest point and witness an overlooking view of the sea. Hike usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.
Olympia Island from afar. A grotto was built on its peak. July 2017

To have a hassle-free trip, you may consider the following:

  • The dolphins usually appear in the early morning, so you better schedule it accordingly.
  • Never forget to check the tide forecast to ensure that the sandbar is evident on your visit!
  • Bring your own food! There are no restaurants in the middle of the sea! There are few vendors though who sell cooked seafood (mostly steamed shrimps). If you are allergic with crustaceans, you gotta think twice!

Personal insights

Manjuyod is often called the Maldives of the Philippines. They are both exceptional, but i have to honestly say that Maldives is ways ahead just to set your expectations.

Manjuyod sandbar is a good swimming spot, don’t get me wrong, but i have to say that it’s amenities and cottages on stilts can be better to make it more appealing to the tourists!

On the othe note, the turqoise waters is very picturesque! Very relaxing and engaging! Take a plunge in the shallow waters and check on small sea creatures swimming around. You may take a  banana boat ride with your friends too to complete the fun or go on a jetski! You can also have a taste of the sea urchins sold at P20.00 per piece. It is totally a perfect and low cost destination for a summer outing or family gathering!

Soloist Galaero Score

This is how I rate Manjuyod Sandbar and other attractions collectively

  • Accessibility and Convenience of Transportation – 95% Instructions for the destination can easily be followed. Public transportation is affordable and good.
  • Tourist Experience and Impact – 83% Limited activities. The tourist spots need to be properly maintained and developed. The Mangrove forest needs some clean-up and the cottages need some serious repairs. The spots have great potentials, so I hope the local government will look into this and decides to level up.
  • Availability of General Accommodations – 83% Limited cottages (need repairs) and limited electricity.
  • Overall Rating – 87%  Generally a great place to visit. The sandbar may not be the best, but still an experience for a first timer. The  views are scenic and refreshing and are good places to unwind and distress! Hopefully on my next visit, improvements are evident for more fun!
